Smartphones are need of today; everything from your door lock to your car security is getting smarter with the advancements in smartphone technology. With these advancements, need of long lasting smartphone battery is also increased. Back in 2015-16, if our phone’s battery ended while being out there was not much to worry about but if same thing happens in today’s world, we cannot afford our phone’s battery dying when away from home.

Due to this increased dependency on smartphones, need of long lasting battery phones is also increased. But it is the fact that not every phone is incorporating all smart features with giant battery, every time something is compromised. If you’re using same smartphone from last 1-2 years, you may have noticed that its battery life is not same as it was when phone was brand new.

Most of the smartphone manufacturers these days use Lithium batteries because of the fact that they ensure large storage energy, high efficiency, and reusability. But at the same time, these batteries need to be cared because now a day, iPhones and even new Android smartphones are coming with non-removable battery which is expensive to be changed. Here are some tested methods and do’s and don’ts for you to extend your battery life:

1. Don’t Let the Battery Charging at extremes:

Back in the times, phone batteries were designed in such a way that they had battery memory, battery range was determined on how you charged them.  If you discharge those batteries to 0% and recharge to 100% their range would be set at the maximum and battery life would last longer.

But this is not the case today, smartphone batteries are not designed in this way. There is no such thing like battery memory, if you charge or discharge them to full, it can stress the battery and can damage battery and reduce the lifespan of battery.

Ideal condition for modern lithium batteries is from minimum 20% to maximum 90% and best performance is at 50%. So if you want to extend life of your smartphone battery, never discharge it to 0%.

2. Don’t Overcharge:

Most of us are likely to put our phones on charging before going to bed and let it to be charged overnight but phone scientist say that this is not a good practice for battery life. Practicing this daily can trigger the increased gas production in battery and due to this change, internal pressure of battery increases and it can cause the battery to swell. It is obvious that swelled battery will not give the same performance as the normal one.

Many smartphone manufacturers considered this point and started using such capacitors in batteries that will stop the current once the battery is fully charged. But not all phone batteries are equipped with such capacitors. So for maintaining the health of you phone’s battery, avoid overcharging and charge it at times, when you can unplug the charger once it is fully charged because frequent overcharges can damage battery.

3. Don’t use Low Quality Chargers:

Avoid using chargers other than ones which comes with your phone because those are designed to work perfectly with you phones’ battery. Increased and decreased voltage supply from low quality charger can reduce the lifespan of battery and cause it to be damaged before time.

4. Don’t Use/Charge in extreme temperatures:

Worried about phone frequently turning off and quick discharge of battery? Check for the temperature of your surroundings because ideal temperature for lithium battery to be in is 25ᵒC. Extreme hot or extreme cold environment can affect the lifespan of your battery and can cause it to discharge real quick. When charging your phone in extreme summers, heat from the charger and from environment can stress the battery causing damage to it.

5. Don’t keep phone unused for long time:

Leaving your phone unused over a long period of time without charging it can cause permanent damage to battery in such a way that it cannot be used again. So if you’re thinking of turning your phone off for long time, charge it to 50% and turn it off and try making it active from time to time to avoid permanent damage.

6. Don’t use while charging:

Many people are so addicted to their smartphones that they’re not ready to leave them idle even while charging but it is most unhealthy practice. Watching videos, playing games and attending phone calls while phone is on charging is very damaging thing for battery. There are number of incidents where batteries burst out due to excessive load on them during charging.

Tips To Extend Life Of Your Smartphone Battery

According to mobile scientists, lifespan of your phone’s battery is already determined based on the number of charge and discharge cycles. It is up to you that how you maintain the healthy life for your battery. Here are few of tips from our side to practice while using phone:

  • Use Dark mode; now a days almost all phones are dark mode enabled and it is tested that dark mode consumes less power than light mode.
  • Use Battery Saver; there are number of battery saver apps and phones have built in battery savers. Such softwares can highlight apps and activities which are consuming more battery than average and close them with your permission.
  • Fetch instead of push; disable push notifications because push means that your phone is always checking for notifications and it consumes so much battery.
  • Restrict Power Consuming Apps.
  • Turn off Wi-Fi when not needed.
  • Use low brightness.
  • Turn off location services.

By following these habits and tips, you can extend life of your smartphone battery and maintain healthy standards of battery life.
